Photos that speak: Fuck your fountain. Fuck your tree. Fuck voter suppression. Fuck your labels. Fuck your stereotypes. Fuck your hatred. Fuck your restaurants. Fuck that dude. Fuck police brutality. Fuck white supremacy.
"preferences" aka my term for my deeply bedded racism that was fostered by years and years of social media telling me that white is the best and the only attractive race and that people of color are lower and not attractive as whites but it’s not really racism because i’m too stupid to realize it these are just "preferences"

I just saw WWZ. I wasn’t going to, but it hit 100 here and my house doesn’t have AC and it was on at a good time and the reviews said it was less stupid than expected.
I knew it had only a passing resemblance to the book. I knew that. But I was disturbed at the zombies doing parkour in the…
i hate this website
Wy? Because people some times post opinions that you disagree with, that you are FORCED to read because you look at the tag? Or because sometimes you are asked to think about things that make you uncomfortable, like the representation of women and minorities in fiction actually matters?
more like because everyone on this website makes eVERYTHING have to do with sexism and racism thE MOVIE IS NEITHER RACIST NOR SEXIST cmon its a movie about zombies i think people are over analyzing it
Okay, lets talk about why representtion is important, and why, if it’s “jsut a movie about zombies” they couldn’t have had the women by as fleshed out as the dude, or at least more useful (or…named?). Or why the Great Saviour of the Earth needed to be white. Let’s talk about that.
When men see a profession or a crowd scene with a proportion of 17% women, they think that is a 50/50 split. When they see a profession or a crowd scene with 33% women, they think it’s overbalanced in favor of women.
Interestingly, 17% is the NUMBER OF SPEAKING ROLES WOMEN HAD IN MOVIES LAST YEAR. 17%. By doing that, movies are helping train people that 17% is the amount of women in the world. There are people who think 3 women on the US Supreme Court is too many. There are people who think that 20% of the US Senate being female is perfectly acceptable.
You do realize that there’s more than 17% of women in the world, right? How is that not important?
Even Pacific Rim, which I loved (because it was not stupid) had only a 17% chunk of female speaking roles. That’s not okay. That’s not acceptable. And telling me to shut my big fat mouth (was that you? This is for posterity, so please be honest) because you think this doesn’t affect you? I don’t care what gender you are, it DOES affect you. Women make up more than 17% of this world, more than 33%, so why shouldn’t I be angry when a movie ignores us and reduces use to nameless drones or wilting damsels clutching a phone?
It’s gets worse when you start looking at minorities in film. Did you miss the part where the Hunger Games fandom rose up in a rage when Rue (described in the book as having dark hair and brown skin) was played by a black girl (with dark hair and brown skin) and people said they didn’t care when she died because now she’s black, instead of the innocent white girl they imagined? How do you think that feels to people of color?
I know, from what people of color have said, because I try to listen, that feels shitty. Like your humanity has been not even ignored, but violently denied. Like no one cares that someone who looks like you died, because they are black.
The first African American woman in space, Mae Jemison, was inspired to become an astronaut because of Lt. Uhura, on Stark Trek. A black woman, on TV, in space? Maybe it was possible in real life. It was, partially because Gene Roddenberry and Nichelle Nichols normalized it.
But… that was just a tv show. This is just a zombie movie. They are all just movies. just TV shows. THere’s no reason NO REASON that there couldn’t be a parity of representations of people in “just a zombie movie.”
I note you haven’t even touched on the anti-Semitism (note- that’s being anti-Jewish people, if it was too big a word for you), but I really didn’t expect you to.
no but really, it’s just a zombie movie. read the book if you want social commentary. it’s liberals like you who turn non-issues into real ones.
…So books can have meaning, but movies are just mindless entertainment? You know the first zombie movie…nope. I don’t have the patience. Just re-read the posts above a few times and maybe something will sink it.
no. it’s called someone reading too much into something. if I remember correctly one of the strongest characters was an Israeli Woman; which by my count means, not sexist, not racist, not anti Semitic. also what would Night of The Living Dead have to do with it? If I remember correctly the only strong character was the lead, and he was a black male who gets killed anyway by the military. According to OPs standards that makes it sexist and racist as well, correct?
The Israeli woman who literally had no name (Segan is rank, not a name). Neither did any of the WHO doctors.
I’m just saying, erasure matters.
If you didn’t like the movie, then just say you didn’t like the movie, don’t try and turn into some kind of social movement because you felt slighted simply because one or 2 female characters acted scared DURING THE APOCALYPSE. but I guess the only way to make you happy is to have all the characters the same color ( other than white) and also for all of them to be the same emotionally. now this completely destroys a thing like narrative and character growth, but hey, gotta make everyone happy right?
Also, her name wasn’t important, citing the DR dammed your own argument. His name doesn’t matter because his it’s about his character. Just like her, they didnt want you hung up on her name, they wanted to focus on her actions. THE BITCH HAD HER HAND CUT OFF AND SHE KEPT KICKING ASS.
What would make me happy is the norm in American movies to not be “white american man saves the day.” Name for me, please, an American movie where the hero (the hero, not the sidekick) is Asian. Latin@. Native. Can you name more than 10 movies in the past ten years where the guy saving the world is black? Now how about women in any of those above categories? Hell, white women?
Now tell me how many white American men get to save the world? Do you see the problem?
You’re not even making sense and it’s pretty clear your reading comprehension of the original post was poor. Acting scared is one thing, literally doing nothing else but sitting and clutching a phone and moping is entirely another.
But good job including a gendered insult in there. That really strengthens your argument.
I like explaining why I didn’t like things. I like thinking that maybe one or two people might be a little bit more aware of what media presents to the world at large (oh, don’t look scared, I’m not lumping you in with them, you’re obviously not interested in raising your awareness of media representation. I don’t expect you to learn anything). ”I didn’t like this!” or “I liked this!” says nothing. ”I didn’t like this and here are my reasons why” or “I liked this and here’s why!” is useful as a review and as social commentary. Nothing in media is produced or is viewed in a vacuum, so why should I shut my big fat mouth just because my criticism are making you uncomfortable?
Did someone force you to read my post? Did someone force you to respond (several times with the same tiresome arguments)? Who hurt you?
Bury me a G.
A very good definition of privilege.

If you think that POC characters shouldn’t be written like white characters, you are a racist.
